According to InterRegs, the European Commission (EC) recently published a consultation document containing proposals for new minimum efficiency requirements on automotive air-conditioning systems. The proposal goes to the European Union’s goal of reducing fleet-average CO2 emissions from new passenger cars to 120 g/km by 2012. Already the EC has issued a directive (2006/40/EC) that, beginning January 1, 2011, will prohibit A/C systems containing refrigerants with a global warming potential (GWP) greater than 150. The EC is seeking comment on the safety aspects of potential new systems that will comply with the 150 GWP target.
