The A8516 multi-output white LED/RGB (red/green/blue) driver from Allegro MicroSystems is an integrated-circuit LED driver for backlighting medium and large LCD monitor displays that enables designers to reduce components. A boost controller drives an external metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor and six internal current sink channels capable of up to 80 mA each; channels can be combined for higher currents. A boost converter operates in constant programmable frequency current mode control. The LED sink current is set by an external resistor, and pulse width modulation dimming allows LED currents to be controlled. The A8516 provides protection against overvoltage, open or shorted LED string, and over temperature. A dual level cycle-by-cycle current limit function offers soft starts and protects against overloads.
