SPM Automation (Canada)'s 3C (Complete Contour Compensation) surface scanning system inspects parts prior to processing, eliminating scrap and improving overall equipment effectiveness. The system, which can be used for various surface scanning applications, specifically addresses part-to-part variation problems typically encountered in the production of blow-molded containers or other large plastic parts. The flexibility of a robot-mounted scanning and processing unit eliminates the hours of setup and fine-tuning work that is necessary with conventional fixed-tooling machinery. Part-to-part variations can be compensated on the fly during production runs because the SPM 3C detects positional and angular variations and automatically adjusts a particular processing unit as required.
