Rapid, on-site field measurement of soot concentration levels in diesel engine oils at levels as high as 15% takes less than 30 s with the InfraCal Soot Meter from Wilks Enterprise. The compact, push-button analyzer provides direct readout of the percent of suspended carbon in diesel engine lubricating oils without sample preparation, dilution, or solvents and transmission cells to clean. Measurement data obtained correlates to thermogravimetric and other analysis techniques. Other features include a rugged, no-moving parts design; one-step operation; a mass of less than 5 lb (2.3 kg); and 12 V dc operation. The Soot Meter is suitable for use on all diesel lubricating oils and engines on-site as well as in field measurements, in testing laboratories, in power generation stations, and for truck, bus, and off-highway equipment.
