A group of seven companies wanting to provide OEMs and other enterprises in the heavy vehicle and equipment industry with a turnkey telematics solution recently formed the Rugged Telematics Alliance and announced its new Rugged Telematics Quick Start Kit. The preconfigured tracking and monitoring unit, demonstrated at ConExpo, is equipped with all the necessary hardware (TCU, antennas, biometric identification, and wire harness). When installed, it allows users to track the location of the equipment, monitor common CAN (controller area network) messages, and report the status of critical machine components using an embedded software application. The Morey Corp. manufactures the hardware platform that supports the CAN. Methode Electronics’ biometric fingerprint reader ensures that project managers know who is operating the equipment and that all operators are authorized. Tri-mode communication is provided through an industrial-grade antenna from Hirschmann that supports satellite, cellular, and GPS communications. LHP Telematics produces an OEM-based embedded software platform capable of custom CAN and sensor configurations. Axeda offers a scalable back-office management platform that provides configuration tools to customize to the user’s business. ORBCOMM and Telenor provide communications, with a combination of terrestrial and satellite offerings and a mixture of high bandwidth data and global connectivity.
