With automotive manufacturers introducing features such as engine start/stop to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions, STMicroelectronics' TDA7850LV audio power amplifier allows in-car entertainment equipment to operate without interruption as the engine is turned off and restarted. Part of a new generation of chips from STMicroelectronics, the TDA7850LV features 4 x 50 W MOSFET output stage. It is the very first start/stop-compatible integrated circuit (IC) of its kind in production, claims the company. Discrete components external to the audio power amplifier can be used to build circuitry to regulate the supply voltage and suppress the pop and click noises that switching between battery power and alternator power can generate. The TDA7850LV makes the use of all these components unnecessary, thereby simplifying design, reducing cost, and saving pc board space. In addition to its start/stop compatibility and high audio performance, the TDA7850LV offers STMicroelectronics’ Flexiwatt power package.
