The AS5165 from austriamicrosystems is a contactless magnetic angle position sensor for measurement over a full 360°. The high-resolution rotary sensor offers protection features for reliable operation in harsh automotive environments and includes a SENT (single edge nibble transmission) J2716 interface for simple transmission of high-resolution information. The AS5165 is a system-on-chip and combines integrated Hall elements, an analog front-end, digital signal processing, and automotive protection features in a single device. Providing protection for the power supply and output pins against overvoltage up to 27 V, the unit's power supply pins are also protected against reverse polarity to -18 V. Continuous short-circuit detection and broken-wire detection are provided, and a fully differential architecture makes the sensor insensitive to stray magnetic fields. The AS5165 can be used for throttle and valve position sensing and other powertrain applications.
