Delphi offers its solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology as an auxiliary power unit (APU) to provide up to 5 kW (6.7 hp) of electrical power for use on commercial vehicles during extended idling periods. Converting the fuel directly to electricity without combustion eliminates most pollutants and noise. The SOFC APU operates independent of the truck’s main internal-combustion engine, providing power to in-cab electrical appliances including lights, refrigerators, microwave ovens, and audio systems. Eventually the unit will provide power to replace belt-driven components such as engine cooling fans and water pumps, removing these loads from the primary engine and improving fuel economy and performance. The SOFC also can be used in stationary and military applications. Energy sources that support the units include natural gas, diesel, bio-diesel, propane, gasoline, and coal-derived and military logistics fuel.
