Allison Transmission is seeing increasing interest from Indian OEMs for additional on- and off-highway vehicle applications for its transmissions. Shown is a 4000 Series Allison transmission widely used in India for heavy-duty commercial vehicles.

Allison Transmission Inc. opened a 203,000-ft² (18,860-m²) multipurpose operations facility located on the outskirts of Chennai in May to help the company satisfy “steadily growing” demand for its fully automatic transmissions in India. City transit bus and off-highway construction vehicles equipped with a range of Allison products are currently in service throughout India, and the company says it is seeing increasing interest from Indian OEMs for additional on- and off-highway vehicle applications for its transmissions. In addition to manufacturing drivetrain components, the facility will also serve as the regional headquarters of Allison Transmission India Pvt. Ltd., housing its executive and regional sales offices. The plant—designed to be flexible in the products that it is capable of producing—also meets the criteria to be classified as a zero-discharge facility, one that completely recycles all water used from all the plant processes. About 300 people are expected to be employed once the facility is fully operational. Allison Transmission established permanent offices in India in 2007.
