With production at its assembly plant in Chattanooga, TN, set to begin next year, Volkswagen recently announced the identity of the first five companies that will occupy its nearby supplier park. The companies include Chattanooga Seating (a joint venture recently formed between Magna Seating and Hollingsworth Logistics) for front and rear seats, Faurecia (Emcon) for front and rear exhaust systems, Magna Exteriors & Interiors for front and rear fascia, MTEK for headliners and door panels, and Thyssen Krupp for front and rear axles and corner modules. A wheel supplier and logistics services supplier also will occupy the supplier park, which covers an area equivalent to nine football fields and which is expected to be completed by June 30, according to VW. While the VW assembly plant itself eventually will employ more than 2000 workers (more than 650 already are employed), the anticipated number of indirect jobs is about 9500. A midsize sedan specially designed for the North American market will be built at the VW assembly plant.
