Formability results from Onward Technologies have successfully predicted dent resistance to optimize weight of exterior panels and offer an improved prediction of the physical part’s behavior during testing. While current solutions increase thickness and change the material, Onward's solution reveals the deflection in the actual parts would be less than the predicted value without considering forming results and moves closer to the actual part’s behavior. Benefits include increased knowledge, direction toward the first-time-right design approach, improved weight and cost targets, and decreased iterations of physical tests that affect program timing. Improving the mass of exterior panels also improves vehicle performance, according to the company, by enhancing fuel economy, extending fuel reserves, and decreasing emissions. Onward provides information about body-in-white and powertrain systems and components behavior prior to production, reducing both pre- and post-production stages.
