Shell Lubricants energized about heavy-duty engine oils

With an eye toward better serving the heavy-duty market, Shell Lubricants is introducing a new Rotella product and improving an existing one as part of a new initiative (including a marketing element) falling under the Energized Protection banner.

All Shell Lubricants heavy-duty engine oils have been consolidated under the Shell Rotella Energized Protection portfolio in what the company calls an easy-to-understand ladder of protection.

The products in the portfolio include a new formulation of Rotella T6 Full Synthetic, which offers improved viscosity protection over the existing product. Rotella T5 10W-30 Synthetic Blend is a new synthetic blend that delivers better fuel economy and low-temperature flow than Rotella T Triple Protection 15W-40 oil. Shell reports that in more than 40 million mi (64 million km) of durability testing, Rotella T Triple Protection offers a reduction in engine wear of up to 22% compared to Rotella T3 SAE 15W-40 and a 30% increase in active ashless chemistry to protect against deposits and sludge.

Shell Rotella T5 and T6 will be available in the fourth quarter of 2009.

The oils are formulated with adaptive technology to provide targeted protection across all driving conditions, the company says, physically and chemically reacting to the ever-changing needs of an engine. Adaptive technology consists of molecules that when under load and temperature stresses form a protective layer on engine surfaces to help keep moving parts separated and, thus, reduce wear.

“Because Shell Rotella heavy-duty diesel engine oils provide protection in critical areas, engine life can potentially be extended and maintenance costs reduced,” said Dan Arcy, OEM Technical Manager for Shell Lubricants. “Shell Rotella T5 10W-30 and Shell Rotella T6 offer improved fuel efficiency and protect the performance of exhaust emission control systems, and Shell Rotella T Triple Protection demonstrates the ability to provide added wear protection compared to previous formulations.”

Rotella T6 full synthetic, Rotella T5 synthetic blend, and Rotella T Triple Protection provide protection in the areas of acid control (protection against corrosion from acids formed as fuel burn); deposit control (keeping engines clean for optimum performance and long life); and wear control (keeping moving metal engine surfaces apart for long life). Each of these top-tier Energized Protection engine oils meets the requirements of on- and off-highway equipment, including the latest vehicles fitted with diesel particulate filters and catalysts. All Shell Rotella multigrade engine oils meet API CJ-4 standards.

Shell says the top-of-the-line 5W-40 CJ-4 T6 full synthetic delivers 34% better wear performance, on average, compared to the previous API CI-4 PLUS 5W-40 formulation. The fuel-economy improvement is 1.5%, Shell claims. It also better controls the impact of engine soot via increased levels of high-performance ashless chemistry that keeps particles apart.

At low temperature, T6 helps engines start more easily vs. a 15W-40 grade, according to the company. Another advantage comes in the area of protection against shear-stability degradation. The company says T6 is particularly suited for use in modern low-emissions, heavy-duty engines, especially those with exhaust aftertreatment devices operating in extreme hot and cold conditions.

The company also recently announced that all Rimula, Pennzoil Long Life, and Quaker State HDX products have been renamed and will be enfolded into the Rotella Energized Protection portfolio in the first quarter of 2010. Other Energized Protection heavy-duty engine oils include Rotella T1 and Rotella T3.
