NorthStar harsh-duty shaftless encoders from Dynapar remove coupling and sealing issues that can occur with rotary position sensors; their magnetic coupling technology eliminates shaft, bearings, and seals that are prone to wear and failure. A wide sensing envelope means increased tolerance to misalignment and easier installation. The encoders come in various sizes including 58-mm (2.3-in) diameter face-mount and 18- or 30-mm (0.7- or 1.2-in) prox-style threaded housings. They provide either incremental or absolute output, including the CAN J1939 protocol.

As ground vehicles employ more electronic sensing, control and communication systems, design engineers are increasingly utilizing more commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) modules. Though COTS slashes development time and costs, it’s still difficult for many military users to find COTS boards that meet their low-volume demands for ruggedization and redundancy.
