The new W 150 has three conveyor options, and with the WIDRIVE system, the whole machine can be run by one operator. Milling drums can be 1.2 m (4 ft) or 1.5 m (5 ft) and can manage a maximum milling depth of 320 mm (12.6 in).

Wirtgen has released a new large milling machine, the W 150. Shown at Intermat, the W 150 offers the size to work on large areas and the flexibility to manage small tasks. It replaces the W 1500 model.

While designed to mill large surfaces, the W 150 is relatively compact at 6.6 m (21.7 ft) in length, 2.5 m (8.2 ft) in width, and 3 m (9.8 ft) in height. Tight steering angles allow for work in urban spaces. Automatic tracking of the rear axle enables precise milling. Milling drums can be 1.2 m (4 ft) or 1.5 m (5 ft) and can manage a maximum milling depth of 320 mm (12.6 in).

Power comes from a Cummins six-cylinder turbo diesel, producing 350 hp (261 kW) that is compliant with all Tier 3 and EU Stage IIIA emissions standards. With the smaller drum, the W 150 has an empty weight of 18,700 kg (41,226 lb) and often does not require special transport permits.

One new feature of the W 150 is the full-floating height-adjustment system that keeps the machine parallel to the pavement automatically during milling and transport modes. It also adjusts to keep the four tracks gripping the ground no matter what the conditions, allowing adherence to the selected milling depth.

A single operator can handle the machine, watching over the milling edge to steer accurately, thereby avoiding manual reworking. The controls are integrated on the armrest, and the seat is adjustable to avoid fatigue.

Another new feature is the WIDRIVE system, which simplifies all controls and links all machine functions. The diesel engine, milling drum drive, travel drive, conveyor drive, water system, height-adjustment system, and leveling system are all networked together for improved performance and fuel savings.

Approximately 50% of the manual operations needed before to control such a machine and coordinate the work are now done by WIDRIVE. As the operator moves the drive lever, the WIDRIVE begins to control the engine speed and travel drive. When milling begins, the engine speed is adjusted as deemed necessary by the system, and when milling finishes, the engine speed is adjusted again. The engine speed is always kept in a set range, and a load limit control is engaged if necessary. The continuous adjustment of the engine speed lowers noise levels and reduces fuel consumption, contributing to significant reduction in the fuel consumption relative to the quantity of asphalt milled.

Engaging the milling drum drive is also done by the WIDRIVE. The system reduces engine speed, engages the clutch, and then increases rpm to commence milling, making the process smooth and automatic.

Water consumption is also controlled by the system and is switched on and off as soon as milling begins and ends, reducing use by 30-40%. During reverse travel, the conveyor drive is switched off by the WIDRIVE as well, preventing milled material from being spilled back into the cut.

In conjunction with the WIDRIVE, the W 150's Level Pro system has individually selectable sensors, memory functions, communication and networking with the main control system, and two control loops, making the system simple to use.

Loading the milled material is the final part of the task, and the conveyor on the W 150 can come in three sizes: standard, long folding, or short folding. The speed can be adjusted on site to meet the demands at hand, and the conveyor can be slewed 60° right and 45° left to load even the largest trailers.
