Schaefer’s C/B5800 Series includes a 12,000-W dc/dc converter, an ac/dc power supply, and battery charging products. The Series’ design uses industrial-grade components to offer an efficient, space-saving solution for extreme environments on railway controls and communications equipment, as well as in military and transportation applications. More than 100 standard models are offered, with modifications available. Five standard dc input voltage options range from 80 to 800 V dc, and single output encompass 12 to 400 V dc. Models have remote sense capability and an operating temperature range of -20 to +75°C (-4 to +167°F); -40°C (-40°F) is an option, along with parallel/redundant operation, additional mechanical ruggedization, inhibit, alarms, system reset signaling, and programming/monitoring functions.

As ground vehicles employ more electronic sensing, control and communication systems, design engineers are increasingly utilizing more commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) modules. Though COTS slashes development time and costs, it’s still difficult for many military users to find COTS boards that meet their low-volume demands for ruggedization and redundancy.
