Seat's Leon Ecomot­ive concept achieves CO2­ emissions of 99 g/km.

Spanish manufacturer Seat, part of the Volkswagen Group, has been creating a "sporty" image for itself, allied to family cars, and is also sharply focused on reduced emissions. At the Geneva Motor Show, the station wagon version of its new Exeo sedan made its debut, but also displayed was an ultragreen concept version of its five-door Leon.

The Exeo ST is based on the previous-generation Audi A4 Avant. With a length of 4.67 m (184 in), it has a luggage capacity of 442 L (15.6 ft³). All Euro-5 compliant, the engine lineup includes three gasoline and three diesel units. Gasoline power output spans 75 kW (101 hp) from a 1.6-L unit to 147 kW (197 hp) for a turbocharged 2.0 L. Diesels are all 2.0-L units with power outputs from 88 to 125 kW (118 to 168 hp). Each drives through a six-speed manual gearbox.

The Exeo is manufactured at Seat’s Martorell factory, near Barcelona, which is also the site for its R&D facility. It was there that the green Leon Ecomotive concept was developed.

Powered by a VW 1.6-L 77-kW TDI diesel engine, its CO2 emissions are 99 g/km, and combined fuel consumption is 3.8 L/100 km. It has a diesel particulate filter, stop/start system, and brake energy regeneration technology. The driver has a gearshift indicator for optimum fuel consumption.

The concept also has longer gearing, low-rolling-resistance tires, and optimized aerodynamics in keeping with VW’s BlueMotion energy-saving philosophy. Early this year, Seat unveiled its TwinDrive Ecomotive hybrid prototype, which followed on VW’s Golf TwinDrive reveal. The car demonstrates Seat’s work toward producing gasoline and/or diesel hybrids.
