Sumitomo Electric Carbide's SMD replaceable carbide tip product line includes an 8XD drill, along with its 3XD and 5XD units. The SMD nickel-plated body provides longer tool life than conventional replaceable tip drill bodies. A rigid serration coupling system affixes the replaceable carbide tips to the drill face, improving drill accuracy and repeatability. Three drill tip styles are offered: SMDT-MTL for steel applications; SMDT-C with a chamfered edge to eliminate breakout in cast iron applications; and SMDT-MEL for machining super alloys, stainless steels, and cast iron. The drill comes in metric and inch diameters of 0.4688 to 1.2008 in.
