Danaher Motion’s rugged fifth-generation LS5 Navigator laser sensor was designed for harsh outdoor environments such as harbors and loading platforms and for cold storage. The sensor can withstand temperature ranges from -30 to +50°C (-22 to +122°F), relative humidity, and mechanical stresses including vibration and shock. A direct drive motor with few moving parts offers minimal maintenance. The LS5 includes an optics system for measurement performance and consistency and is adaptable to various communications, simplifying sensor replacement. Navigator also works with AutoSurveyor software for automatic determination of reflector coordinates.

As ground vehicles employ more electronic sensing, control and communication systems, design engineers are increasingly utilizing more commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) modules. Though COTS slashes development time and costs, it’s still difficult for many military users to find COTS boards that meet their low-volume demands for ruggedization and redundancy.
