USA Tolerance Rings, in partnership with Ididit, has developed a collapsible ring for steering columns to prevent a driver from being impaled with the steering column during a front-end collision. The ring creates a tube-in-tube collapse column to prevent injury while maintaining the existing 16-gauge tubing. A flanged tolerance ring with an advance wave configuration fits between the tubes and is retained by the outer tube, while the inner tube slips axially inside the ring. Features include a collapse force of 550 lb (250 kg); the inner tube offers consistent axial collapse without corrosion despite tube imperfections or temperature range. Columns are either chrome-plated or powder-coated and maintain outward appearance.
