Iveco launches EEV engines for Europe

Iveco has modified its Euro-5-compliant truck engine range to the EEV standard by optimizing combustion.

Iveco, the Fiat Group truck division, based in Turin, Italy, will make EEV (Enhanced Environmentally Friendly Vehicle) compliant diesel engines available throughout the truck range in Europe. Individual markets can decide if EEV-compliant engines will be the regular offering or available as an option. In some markets, such as the U.K., the company has already decided to make EEV engines regular equipment at no additional cost.

U.K. truck operators are eligible for a tax discount if they choose trucks that meet the Euro-5 limit ahead of the implementation date of Oct. 1. EEV-compliant vehicles also qualify for the discount. Similarly, truck operators in Germany can claim a discount on highway tolls.

EEV limits can be seen as an intermediate step between Euro-5 and Euro-6 limits. Martin Flach is Product Director at Iveco U.K. and until recently worked in Iveco’s product development division. He told AEI, “The limit will be introduced purely by optimizing combustion. By working on combustion, we’ve managed to get to EEV levels without adding a diesel particulate filter. That was our doubt. We thought we might end up needing a particulate trap, but in practice we’ve managed to get there without.”

In practice, not every Iveco engine can be adapted to meet the EEV limits without additional aftertreatment. Iveco’s most powerful truck engine, the 13-L Cursor 13, rated at 560 PS (412 kW), could only meet the EEV limits with a diesel particulate filter. Iveco sold between 500 and 600 vehicles equipped with the engine across Europe in 2007. The cost of modifying as few as 200 vehicles could be prohibitive, so the company will only offer Euro-5 variants.

Engines that will be available to EEV standards include Iveco’s Tector and Cursor engine families. The Tector is used in Iveco’s EuroCargo lightweight to medium-weight truck range. The engine is available as a four-cylinder engine with 3.9-L capacity or as an inline six-cylinder engine of 5.9-L capacity.

The four-cylinder Tector is available with power ratings of 140, 160, and 182 PS (103, 118, and 134 kW) while the six-cylinder variant is rated at 217, 251, 279, and 299 PS (160, 185, 205, and 220 kW). The engine was developed and is built by Fiat Powertrain Technologies as the “Nef Program.” Tector engines are equipped with common-rail fuel injection.

The Cursor inline six-cylinder engine is used to power Iveco’s Stralis and Trakker heavy truck ranges and is available in three different sizes: 7.79, 10.3, and 12.88 L. All three engines are equipped with electronic unit injectors.

The 7.79-L “Cursor 8” engine is available with power ratings of 310, 330, and 360 PS (228, 243, and 265 kW). The 10.3-L “Cursor 10” engine is rated at either 420 or 450 PS (309 or 331 kW), while the 12.88-L “Cursor 13” offers power outputs of 410, 450, 500, and 560 PS (302, 331, 368, and 412 kW).

Euro 5 will become the mandatory limit in October. In the meantime, the European Commission published a proposed standard for Euro-6 limits in December 2008. The proposal would reduce NOx emissions limits from 2.0 g/kWh for Euro 5 to 0.4 g/kWh for Euro 6, an 80% reduction. Particulate matter emissions would be reduced from 0.02 g/kWh to 0.01 g/kWh, a 50% reduction. The World Harmonized Test cycles—WHSC and WHTC—will be used for Euro-6 testing.
