Having received European regulatory approval, GKN Aerospace took ownership and operational control of the former Airbus UK, Filton wing-component and assemblies manufacturing facility on Jan. 5. About 1500 employees joined the company with the transfer, bringing GKN's global workforce count to about 10,000. Filton will be the focus of GKN's participation in Airbus's A350 XWB program. A new dedicated manufacturing facility at Filton will employ the latest automated composites technology in the production of A350 XWB wing trailing edge and wing spars and assemblies. GKN plans to expand its Filton customer base beyond Airbus by investing in the plant.

In the ongoing design and engineering crusade that is vehicle lightweighting, grams count. In some cases, tenths of a gram count. Regardless of how fuel price has moderated in the U.S. in recent years, the importance of global platforms and global markets means the drive to create more mass-efficient vehicle structures, subassemblies and components continues unabated.
