MEN Micro offers a fanless, intelligent display computer that is both rugged and maintenance free. The cost-effective DC1 combines the Intel Atom processor with aluminum construction to provide a low-power, reliable computer that withstands the vigorous environments found in many mobile, mission-critical, and harsh applications such as transportation, avionics, and industrial automation. The ruggedized panel PC features a total power dissipation of 20 W and operates over an extended temperature range of -40 to +70°C (-40 to +158°F). Because the control electronics are located directly behind the display, the DC1 employs conductive cooling between the electronics and the display, eliminating the need for a cooling fan.

As ground vehicles employ more electronic sensing, control and communication systems, design engineers are increasingly utilizing more commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) modules. Though COTS slashes development time and costs, it’s still difficult for many military users to find COTS boards that meet their low-volume demands for ruggedization and redundancy.
