There is usually a crazy concept at most international motor shows but Toyota has cleverly dubbed its latest concept the Aygo Crazy. Based loosely on the front-engined Aygo hatchback built in the Czech Republic, it is a fully operational vehicle and acts as a technology demonstrator—although not with production in mind.
Revealed at the British International Motor Show in London in July, Aygo Crazy was described by Toyota as a one-off “shopping supercar,” although it owes more to the spirit of Group B rallying than everyday practicality and is without electronic chassis systems, power steering, or ABS. Toyota describes it as being like a roofed go-kart.
Although its basic styling is similar to that of the production Aygo, it has a custom-made body and 17-in alloy wheels shod with 225/45 Goodyear tires. There is a direct link to Toyota’s sporting side via the Crazy’s carbon-fiber rear wing—a part taken directly from the race cars in the American Champ Car series.
The Aygo Crazy is powered by Toyota’s 1.8-L VVT-i unit that was fitted to the final-generation Celica and MR2 Roadster. But it is rear-mounted, driving the rear wheels through the Roadster’s five-speed manual gearbox. The engine includes a Toyota Motorsport turbo conversion kit to boost power output to about 147 kW (197 hp) and 240 N·m (177 lb·ft). In comparison, the standard road-going Aygo offers 50 kW (67 hp) and 93 N·m (69 lb·ft).
Toyota designed a bespoke cooling system for the car, which includes an oversize, front-mounted aluminum radiator.
Suspension is from the MR2 Roadster, with MacPherson struts front and rear. Adjustable Tein dampers sharpen dynamic performance, and the front and rear tracks are 25 mm (1 in) wider than those of the standard Aygo.
The concept weighs 1050 kg (2315 lb) and has an estimated top speed in excess of 200 km/h (124 mph).
The cabin, finished by specialist coach trimmers, O’Rourke, features purpose-built sports seats with four-point safety harnesses and a full roll cage.
