Lightweight starter

The lightweight, high-torque Lycoming engine X-Drive starter from Kelly Aerospace was developed to meet the needs of the aerospace industry. It starts with the same permanent magnet motor as the E-Drive starter and offers low current draw, high torque, and superior duty cycle. An all-metallic planetary gear reduction system has the strength and durability to crank large piston engines and still deliver time-between-overhaul life performance. A key characteristic is the side-mounted solenoid actuation system, which allows a compact design and removes the mechanical Bendix drive.

Fuel efficiency—and the economic and ecological benefits associated with it—continues to be the white rabbit of the global aviation industry. While engine builders look toward composites and electrification, and airframe designers toward lightweighting and aerodynamics, engineers at NASA’s Glenn Research Center recently completed testing of a novel concept: the boundary layer ingesting propulsor.
