Iveco, the Fiat Group’s truck-making division, has revised its EuroCargo medium-weight truck range. The 2008 changes introduce a host of modifications, which spans the 6000- to 19,000-kg (13,200- to 41,900-lb) gross vehicle weight (GVW) range.
The engine options remain unchanged in the new model. Power for the EuroCargo comes from the Iveco Tector Euro-IV and Euro-V engine range, originally developed jointly with Cummins and Fiat Group agricultural division Case New Holland. The Tector range consists of four-cylinder 3.9-L common-rail diesels producing 140, 160, and 182 hp (104, 119, and 136 kW). Six-cylinder 5.9-L variants produce 217, 250, 280, and 300 hp (162, 187, 209, and 224 kW).
The most visible changes have been applied to the cab. Externally, these include the grille and badging, already applied to the Stralis heavy truck and Trakker tipper chassis ranges. The one-piece plastic front fender is available either in grey or matched to the body color. Alternatively, Iveco offers a one-piece steel fender, designed for tipper or other heavy-duty operations. The steel fender is painted dark grey to match the accompanying plastic parts.
Inside the cab is a new steering wheel, dashboard, and center module, while the gear lever has been moved to the dashboard to improve cross-cab access for multi-drop delivery drivers.
The new steering wheel is larger than its predecessor at 470 mm (18.5 in) in diameter and is adjustable for reach and rake. A centrally mounted console houses a bank of switches for auxiliary functions arranged symmetrically on either side of the hazard warning light switch. While it may look tidy to a designer, the identical switches are less successful ergonomically, because they are difficult to distinguish at a glance.
More frequently used switches have been repositioned closer to the driver. When satellite navigation is specified, the display is mounted centrally on top of the dashboard. The dashboard molding also incorporates new air vents.
The new central control module between the seats houses the park brake control and, where applicable, differential lock switches. The seats are identical to those fitted to the Stralis heavy truck and incorporate the inertia reel seatbelts. There are new panels for the doors, featuring larger door pockets than before.
Iveco has included bodybuilder electrical connections for power takeoffs (PTOs) in the EuroCargo’s CAN bus network. Iveco offers both ZF and Hydrocar PTOs with all transmission options, and Iveco’s own Multipower direct engine PTO with 280- and 300-hp engine variants. The CAN bus permits up to three PTO operating modes.
New transmission options have been introduced with the latest EuroCargo. In addition to the five-speed manual transmission available before, Iveco has also introduced a range of six- and nine-speed ZF manual transmissions. Six-speed gearboxes are available as automated transmissions, designated Eurotronic. Some markets, such as the U.K., will be equipped with the Eurotronic transmission as standard. Options include the ZF S700, S800, and S1000 six-speed transmissions and their automated variants, designated AS.
Nine-speed options available are the 9S-75 TD direct drive transmission and 9S-75 TO and 9S-1110 overdrive transmissions. Iveco is also offering the Allison S1000, S2500 and S3000 five-speed overdrive torque converter automatic transmissions as an option.
EuroCargo features disc braking on both axles, with ABS and ASR traction control as standard. Models between 6000 and 10,000 kg GVW are equipped with air-over-hydraulic braking systems and also benefit from larger-diameter disc brakes with thicker brake discs. Brake pad lining thickness has also been increased. Iveco claims that pad volume is greater by 35%. An audible warning sounds if the driver’s door is opened and the parking brake has not been applied.
