Part of AMETEK’s NGI vehicular instrumentation system, CAN-Communicator (C-COM) is a compact 2-in graphic display module. The rugged, versatile gauge can be used either by itself or as a complement to existing instrumentation by connecting it to an SAE J1939 (CAN) data bus. Operating from 9- to 32-V dc, the module can display data directly from the vehicle databus or text and graphics as customer specified. The standard version includes data parameters of key vehicle operations as well as active and stored fault codes from the engine control unit along with pop-up warning messages. Applications for C-COM include a fuel-economy version with current and average mpg, trip and total fuel, and fuel rate (gal/h).

As ground vehicles employ more electronic sensing, control and communication systems, design engineers are increasingly utilizing more commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) modules. Though COTS slashes development time and costs, it’s still difficult for many military users to find COTS boards that meet their low-volume demands for ruggedization and redundancy.
