High torque is focus of new Mack engine

Mack’s new MP10 engine, its most powerful ever, features a harmonically balanced camshaft and insulated engine mounts to reduce NVH.

Mack Trucks is beefing up its engine line with the MP10 engine, a big-block diesel with up to 605 hp (451 kW). It is the most powerful engine Mack has produced.

The single-overhead-cam engine can generate peak power of 515, 565, and 605 hp (384, 421, and 451 kW) in its MaxiCruise configuration. Its torque ranges from 1860 to 2060 lb·ft (2520 to 2790 N·m) at 1200 rpm. This torque lets the MP10 pull heavy loads from a dead stop.

“An operator running a log train is going to need low-end power to move maybe 250,000 lb gross combination weight out of a logging camp to the lumber mill. I foresee a lot of use in logging and other off-highway markets like light mining,” said David McKenna, Mack Powertrain Marketing Manager.

The engine is certified to meet the US07 emissions standards, using ultra-low-sulfur diesel fuel and a diesel particulate filter. It employs the V-MAC IV controller, the next generation of Mack’s proven Vehicle Management and Control System. A Maxidyne configuration of the engine will be released at a later date.

“This is 99.9% cleaner and has over 105 more horsepower than we had before,” said McKenna

Looking forward to the next level of emissions regulations, Mack made its path clear. “We’re absolutely convinced that SCR is the way to go,” said Paul Vikner, Mack’s CEO when the MP10 was introduced at ConExpo. He was succeeded by Dennis Slagle on April 1.

The engine has a dry mass of just over 3000 lb (1360 kg), providing output of approximately 38 hp/L.

The engine is being introduced on the Titan, a truck for construction and long-haul applications that Mack touts as the most powerful truck the 108-year-old company has ever built. It’s built on the Cornerstone chassis, offered in three frame rail thicknesses: 8, 9.5, and 11 mm (0.32, 0.37, and 0.43 in).
