Perkins’ medium-duty 800D

Perkins says that its Stage IIIA, Tier 3 800D 3.3-L engine offers a 4% increase in power and a torque rise of 5% over its predecessor, while generating fewer emissions.

Perkins’ 3.3-L 800D engines were designed specifically for construction and agricultural equipment as well as industrial power units, fitting in between the company’s 400 and 1100 series engines. The four-cylinder engines are available in both naturally aspirated (804D-33) and turbocharged (804D-33T) versions. The 804D-33 offers 47 kW (63 hp) at 2500 rpm and 200 N·m (148 lb·ft) at 1600 rpm, while the 804D-33T offers 55 to 62 kW (74 to 83 hp) at 2500 rpm and 245 to 265 N·m (181 to 195 lb·ft) at 1600 rpm.

The new engines offer a 4% increase in power and a torque rise of 5% over their Stage II, Tier 2 800C predecessors, says Perkins. Noise reductions of more than 2 dB(A) were achieved through quieter combustion, a redesigned geartrain, and a stiffer timing case.

Engineers at Perkins maintained the same package size and hookups on the new engine as was on the 800C, providing customers with ease of changeover. An increase in top tank temperature, 110 to 112°C (230 to 234°F) minimizes impact on heat rejection. Oil and filter changes are set at 500-h service intervals, and fuel filter replacement is 1000 h.

The new engines also incorporate a number of features to ensure a high level of durability and dependability in the field, including a strengthened cast-iron cylinder block for rigidity and long life, a mechanical rotary fuel injection pump, and advanced cross-flow cylinder heads for improved combustion efficiency. The indirect-injection 804D-33 features a two-stage injection, which Perkins says is designed to ensure complete burning with a lower rate of pressure rise within the cylinders. The direct-injection 804D-33T also features a two-stage injection.

Both engines have a cast-iron engine block and cylinder head, and a bore and stroke of 94 x 120 mm (3.7 x 4.7 in). The 804D-33 has a compression ratio of 22:1, while the turbocharged engine has a ratio of 19:1.
