Dow Automotive Systems’ BETAMATE two-part epoxy structural adhesive for durable bonding of untreated aluminum (shown) was runner-up for the 2014 Altair Enlighten Award. Jaguar Land Rover won for its comprehensive lightweight vehicle strategy.

Automotive Engineering is serving as media partner for the 2015 Altair Enlighten Award. In collaboration with the Center for Automotive Research (CAR), the annual award recognizes achievements in lightweighting across the automotive industry and will be presented during the CAR Management Briefing Seminars (MBS), August 3-5 in Traverse City, MI. The Enlighten Award, in its third year, is the industry's only award solely dedicated to acknowledging innovation in automotive industry weight-reduction efforts.

The 2014 award was won by Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) for its lightweight vehicle strategy that takes a holistic approach to CO2 reduction, linking strategies of weight reduction in the body and chassis systems to powertrain and related secondary weight savings, while maximizing recycled material use and lowering energy consumption during the manufacturing stage. The runner-up prize was awarded to Dow Automotive Systems for the application of its BETAMATE bonding solution on Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks.

"We are pleased to partner with Altair and CAR on this important award," Kevin Jost, Editorial Director for SAE International, said. "Recognizing our colleagues for their outstanding work and innovative thinking helps to move our industry forward."

Entries will be accepted through Friday, June 26, 2015, at http://www.altair.com/enlightenaward/. Finalists will be selected in July, with the winners announced at CAR MBS in August.

Still riding on a separate hydroformed-steel ladder frame (itself redesigned and CAE-optimized for greater strength and lower mass), the new eight-passenger SUV sheds up to 300 lb (136 kg) compared with the incumbent model. The mass reduction enabled Ford engineers to move to a powertrain format using only the 3.5-L turbocharged V6 with auto stop-start and 10R80 10-speed automatic.
