ZF’s Schweinfurt location inaugurated a 400-m2 (4300-ft2) Composites Tech Center on July 29. The facility comprises a press with a high-pressure injection unit for various resin hardener systems, and systems for processing including a robot, as well as an infrared and tempering furnace. ZF will develop more knowledge for the volume production of components made from fiber-reinforced plastics (FRPs). Its press will produce components from duraplastic according to the RTM (resin transfer molding) process. The supplier also will produce minor quantities of FRP parts for prototypes. The Composite Tech Center has been tasked with three objectives: basic research of the different RTM processes and the tools used in these processes; research into joining technology, in particular bonding methods; and further development of specific ZF lightweight design concepts. EUR 3.1 million has been invested in machines and buildings for the tech center.
