Bosch has introduced its highest-output compact off-highway alternator for power, fuel savings, and reliability: the 240-A, 14-V (150-A, 28-V) “P” or Power-feature alternator. To meet the demands of higher underhood temperatures and output demands, the P-feature combines high output efficiency with increased temperature resistance. Offering 77% efficiency and a mass less than 19 lb (8.6 kg), the alternator uses less fuel, thereby reducing operational costs. Dual internal fans keep the internal components cool under extreme conditions. Bosch’s P-feature alternators are suitable for construction, forestry, or agriculture.

The engine maker used the ConExpo 2017 stage to announce its intention to produce a dual-fuel capable (natural gas and propane) off-highway engine by mid-2018, leveraging its already-in-production on-highway CNG truck engine.
Active flow control devices based on electric plasmas can smooth the turbulent wakes that sweep off the rear edges of truck trailers travelling at highway speeds.
Commercial vehicles are beginning to adopt alternative energy sources, but the transition remains slow. Batteries and an array of renewable fuels are seeing more usage, but costs and infrastructure remain hindrances for these fragmented technologies.
Various levels of electrification, connected solutions and alternative fuels are among the technology pathways that will lead to reductions of CO2, according to AVL's Dr. Marko Dekena. He spoke with Truck & Off-Highway Engineering about a variety of topics ahead of this year's AVL International Commercial Powertrain Conference.
