Magna International Inc.’s Magna Exteriors and Interiors (MEI) operating unit, along with Zoltek, offers a low-cost carbon-fiber sheet molding compound (SMC) through their global partnership. The jointly developed carbon-fiber SMC material uses Zoltek’s Panex 35 commercial carbon fiber combined with Magna’s EpicBlendSMC formulations and production knowledge. EpicBlendSMC EB CFS-Z, which is a part of MEI’s EpicBlendSMC product line, allows Magna to offer global manufacturers an expanded range of lightweight parts, subsystems, and semistructural applications for automotive as well as commercial truck and other markets. EB CFS-Z uses a proprietary vinyl ester resin system and chopped carbon-fiber reinforcements with nominal 25-mm (0.98-in) carbon fiber. Featuring a tensile strength of 191 MPa and flexural strength of 431.9 MPa, the compound is designed to mold and flow in a traditional SMC compression process, and it provides parts with low weight, high mechanical properties, and high heat resistance.

In the ongoing design and engineering crusade that is vehicle lightweighting, grams count. In some cases, tenths of a gram count. Regardless of how fuel price has moderated in the U.S. in recent years, the importance of global platforms and global markets means the drive to create more mass-efficient vehicle structures, subassemblies and components continues unabated.

Still riding on a separate hydroformed-steel ladder frame (itself redesigned and CAE-optimized for greater strength and lower mass), the new eight-passenger SUV sheds up to 300 lb (136 kg) compared with the incumbent model. The mass reduction enabled Ford engineers to move to a powertrain format using only the 3.5-L turbocharged V6 with auto stop-start and 10R80 10-speed automatic.
