Using design for Six Sigma, SKF redesigned its MacPherson suspension bearing unit to meet increased performance demands, in terms of higher reliability and increased operating life, to withstand higher levels of severe driving conditions. According to SKF, the MacPherson suspension bearing unit can extend the unit life, leading to an increased overall suspension system lifetime. The new seal design combines protection against external pollution with low-friction torque. With the new bearing unit, there is 50% less water content when tested against a standard seal and 20% less friction torque, claims the company. The new ball set is designed to increase radial load capacity by 20% and lower radial clearance by 40%.
