Balqon demonstrates electric yard tractor in Europe

  • 19-Dec-2011 02:19 EST

Balqon Corp., a California-based developer of electric drive system technologies for commercial electric vehicles (EVs), has successfully demonstrated an all-electric yard tractor that incorporates Balqon’s XR E20 electric drive system into a chassis developed by Mol Transport Solutions, a manufacturer of trucks, trailers, and waste management systems in Europe. This new model incorporates Balqon’s proprietary EV drive system, encompassing complete power management, propulsion, and power conversion systems and including drivetrains and energy systems (i.e., batteries and a charging system). The European yard tractor can tow loads over 30 ton (27 t) with a claimed 16+ h operation range on a single charge. The vehicle also demonstrates below 69 dB in noise level and features the latest idle-shut off technologies. Balqon believes that the operating costs of the European yard tractor will be 74% lower than that of its conventional diesel competitors in, for example, warehouse and marine port applications.
