Caterpillar Inc. plans to open a new manufacturing facility in Xuzhou, Jiangsu province, China, with construction and modification of pre-existing buildings beginning this year and production scheduled to start in mid-2012. The 18,000 m² (200,000 ft²) facility will produce undercarriage components and track assemblies for hydraulic excavators and is expected to employ about 400 people when operating at full capacity. According to Caterpillar, the new facility is part of the company's strategic investment to expand its presence in the Asia/Pacific region. Caterpillar officials also expect cost-saving benefits from the new facility, as it will be adjacent to the Caterpillar Xuzhou Ltd. hydraulic excavator facility, allowing the company to ship finished undercarriage components to the Caterpillar machine facility for final assembly.
