Range-extenders evolve alongside growing market for hybrid vehicles

The 2011 Chevrolet Volt’s 1.4L I-4  exemplifies current off-the-shelf range-extender technology.

The off-the-shelf piston engines that have been the only choice for developing range-extended EVs are rapidly being replaced by ICEs designed from scratch for fairly constant load in series hybrids, according to the IDTechEx Research report “Range Extenders for Electric Vehicles 2011-2021,” available from Research and Markets at http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/c66014/range_extenders_fo. Besides piston engines, future choices will include engines with integral electricity generation, including Wankel rotary engines, free piston engines, as well as micro turbines and fuel cells that work at constant load. Range-extenders, which AEI has written about extensively, will be implemented in the about 8 million hybrid vehicles to be produced in 2021 as well as in other vehicle types, predicts the study, which also profiles key developers, manufacturers, and integrators and analyzes changing requirements for power output.
